Je suis entré au service de CKCV en mai de l'année 1952. J'ai été très impressionné. Il y avait un immense hall que l'on ne pouvait franchir sans l'accord d'une secrétaire qui nous demandait "qui voulez-vous rencontrer?". Je viens rencontrer Monsieur Paul Lepage, je viens pour un emploi de commis de bureau, que je lui dis fièrement. Elle m'introduit et me présente à Mademoiselle Marie-Paule Vachon, adjointe de Monsieur Paul Lepage, gérant général. Je suis timide et impressionné devant ces deux personnes. Monsieur Lepage m'explique mes tâches. Il me dit que je devrai me rapporter à Monsieur Steven Guay, avec qui je devrai apprendre le travail à faire. Je suis engagé. Je travaille dans une station de radio de Québec. Je suis heureux. Je cotoie des personnalités: Saint-Georges Côté, Louise Leclerc, Marcel Leboeuf, Jean Leroy, M. Bender, Albert Duberger. René Collard, Jean Pouliot, Guy Samson, Tony Beaulieu, Georges-Henri Lacroix, Roger Bruneau, Normand Maltais, André Duchesneau, Pat O'Regan, Lucien Lapierre, Madeleine Lachance, Roger Lachance. Il y a aussi Laurette Gaboury, Gisèle Audet, Huguette Lacouline, Denise Gaulin, Suzanne Veilleux, etc. J'y suis resté 22 ans. Au plaisir.

Greetings from Oulu, Finland! My name is Jari Ruohomäki and I send this letter
to you because I was able to listen to your station´s program here in Finland
with my special equipment in 1982. I never succeeded in picking up the
confirmation of CKCV to my reception. Therefore I decided to send this e-mail
when I found your address from Internet.

I am 45 years old, married and have a 18-year old daughter Anniina and a
14-year-old son Antti. I am a teacher of biology and geography for pupils from
13 to 16 years. My wife, Eija, is also a teacher and she teaches English which
all pupils from 9 to 16 study as a compulsory subject here in Finland.

Oulu is the 5th biggest city in Finland with more than 120 000 inhabitants. It
is situated just at the northern end of the Gulf of Bothnia in the northern
part of Finland, more than 300 miles north of the southern coast and Helsinki,
the capital of Finland. Oulu is the center of culture, traffic, sports and

Since 1973 my main hobby has been listening to foreign radio stations. As you
may know this hobby is called dx-listening. Since the beginning of the 1980´s I
have concentrated on listening to North-American AM stations. The conditions for
listening are quite bad here in the region of Oulu. Therefore I go each winter
with a friend of mine to the most northern part of Finland called Lapland for a
listening expedition. We spend a week or two in an isolated cottage. The
conditions are much better there because of less interference from human
activities and from European AM stations. It is also possible to have longwire
antennas which are ideal for our listening purposes. For the expedition we
usually go to Lemmenjoki, some 200 miles north of the Arctic circle and 350
miles north of Oulu. It was right there I was able to hear your station, too.

To prove that I did hear your station, I enclose an audio recording containing
some parts of the program heard. The recording is 24 years old and is not
anymore high quality, but good enough for identifying. There are several "CKCV
12-80" identifications.

I suppose you are interested in my equipment. My receiver is a Japanese made JRC
NRD 535D communications receiver with an inbuilt digital frequency computer.
When I heard your station my antenna was a 3300-feet-long copper wire which was
directed to North-America, towards your area to be exact. In fact, I had five
different antennas in Lemmenjoki pointing to five different North-American
directions. It is very important to have a long antenna to a certain direction
when one tries to pick up overseas AM stations.

be very pleased if you had time to verify my reception of your station CKCV by

Mes premiers pas dans l'univers des communications je les dois à l'inéffable Roger Gagnon, chef annonceur et pédagogue, qui a poussé l'audace d'offrir à un jeune blanc-bec deux petites heures d'antenne tout de suite après «Blue Skies» alors animé par Maurice Dionne. «Au soleil de minuit» a donc vu le jour au sons des chansonniers et poètes visionnaires qui précursaient la montée d'un nationalisme fier.
Je revois l'élégant directeur-général Magella Alain dans son bureau cossu; je retrouve Louise Leclerc sur la scène du chic «Baril d'huitre»; je sens les relents de pipe de Deverchère Mercier; je revis les taquinneries de mon ancien confrère de l'Académie de Québec alors journaliste, Gaston l'Heureux; j'entends les éclats de rire d'Alexandre Dumas et la voix feutrée du journaliste sportif Paddy Pednault.
Quarante trois ans plus tard, jettant un coup d'oeil dans le rétroviseur, je peux me compter chanceur d'avoir bénéficié d'une plate-forme de lancement aussi solide et ce, malgré le fait qu'un certain directeur des programmes, Yvan Frenette pour ne pas le nommer, avait prédit qu'avec un nom comme Winston McQuade, je n'avais aucune chance de réussir dans ce métier au Québec. La vie fait bien les choses avec un peu de chance.

Let me first introduce myself. My name is Tuomo Ahonen and I'm writing to you from North of Europe, Finland. I got your name and e-mail address from a very good friend of mine, Jari Ruohomäki who just some days ago received a CKCV reception verification from You.

I'm also very pleased to report reception of CKCV on 1280 kHz back in January 1981. Unfortunately I have lost the exact times and date of the reception but luckily I do have a recording of this actual reception back then in my archieves. Wave propagation has always fascinated me and it is amazing that I could pick up your station so far away across the Atlantic in the other side of the world. The reception was a real thrill to me! Actually I picked up CKCV's signal many times back in late 1970's and 1980's and very often with surprisingly good audio quality here in Finland. I sent many reception reports and tapes to CKCV back then but for some unknown reasons nobody ever answered my mail. The attached particular audio was picked up with my Trio 9R-59DS communications receiver with a 1000 meters long wire antenna directed to the eastern parts of Canada and the US.

Please listen to the audio - I hope you'll enjoy it very much. I would greatly appreciate to hear your comments on the audiofile.

Si possible, j'aimerais que vous communiquiez avec moi erpsonnelement par e-mail.
J'ai su voilà 2-3 ans environ que j'étais le fils hors-mariage d'une personnalité très connue, aujourd'hui décédé, qui fut l'un des artisans de CKCV. Je dsires respectez publiquement l'anonymat ce cette personne, mais j'aimerais en savoir plus sur mon père biologique que je n'ai malheureusement pas pu connaître avant son décès voilà 2-3 ans.
J'aimerais connaître sa vie, son travail à CKCV dans le temps qu'il était animateur. J'ai su aussi qu'il possédait aussi une taverne sur le Blv. Dorchester je crois. Je connais le nom, mais je tiens à vous le révéler en privé. J'i su qu'il était décédé à l'âge de 88 ans.
Une réponse de votre part serait apprécié si vous pouviez communiquer avec moi à mon adresse e-mail. Mon histoire est très intéressante à entendre, et j'aimerais en entendre aussi de ce personnage qui était mon père biologique.

Je n'ai pas rêvé pourtant, mais je ne vois son nom nulle part. Pierre Beaulé . C'est pourtant lui qui était mon DP en 1971 avec André gagnon puis Yves Lorrain. Réal d'Amours, alias Jean Sylvain, Marcel Roussel et Jacques Rivard, je ne vais pas tous les nommer mais il doit bien y avoir quelqu'un qui nse souvient de lui d'autant plus qu'on m'a dit qu'il était décédé malgré son jeune âge. Il portait un pace-maker.

En passant je suis à rédiger mes " Mémoires radiophoniques. On s'en reparlera.

Tout comme pour les grandes vedettes de cinema, il y a plusieurs artisans qui demeurent dans l'ombre, et l'histoire se repete en ce qui concerne CKCV...Dans son personnel, il y avait des discaires, nouvellistes, techniciens, operateur de console, dont je fis partis dans les annees 1952..egalement plusieurs chroniquers de sport et cinema, entre entre autre Rene Collard (sports) et Christo Christy (cinema)ce dernier decedait a Santa Monica Californie en 1962 et enterre au Holy Cross Cemetary (aux cotes de plusieurs vedettes de cinema ex;Bing Crosby, Gary Cooper,etc,etc)malheureusement ces artisans n'ont aucun credits dans les donnees du site de CKCV
